[1]Serbia has fallen under the control of the Ottoman Empire in 1459. The Serbian people were unhappy with being under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, so they were seeking for their independence by starting the first uprising (1804-1813) led by Karađorđe Petrović; and later on starting a second uprising (because the first one was unsuccessful) (1815-1817) which was led by Miloš Obrenović. This revolution was highly important because the result of the second uprising was, that Serbia gained semi-independence from the Ottoman Empire (formally in 1829).
[2]The Slaughter of the Knezes on 4th February, 1804, angered the people and the leaders even more; causing an uprising on 14th February, 1804 in a small Šumadija village where they gathered and made decisions, such as choosing Karađorđe Petrović as the leader. Back in the year 1787-1791, the Austro-Turkish war ended, with the return of the Belgrade Pashaluk. The Serbs expected reprisals (hard revenge) from the Turks, due to supporting Austrians. Sultan Selim III has given the complete command of the Sanjak of Smederevo and Belgrade to the battle-hardened/cruel Janissaries. The Janissaries were Serbians that have been taken away (by the Turks) from their families at a young age, to train battle strategies and fighting against their own country and people. Later on, Sultan Selim III granted authority to the peaceful Hadži Mustafa Pasha. In 1793, Selim III gave more rights to Serbs. Taxes were to be collected by local Serbian rulers called knezes (local dukes). There was also freedom of trade and religion. He has also removed the Janissaries from Belgrade Pashaluk. But afterwards, when the Sultan allowed them to return in 1799, a Janissary Bego Novljanin murdered a Serb in Šabac. The Janissaries supported Begu Novljanin.
