Philosophy: Which Branch Best Describes Me?
This essay defines philosophy, states the reasons and purposes of studying philosophy, and examines the influences of philosophy on one’s life. This paper also defines the major philosophical areas of inquiry, provides a description of approaches to philosophical questions for each of the major philosophical areas of inquiry, explains how philosophy and culture interact in the development of thought, states which of the major philosophical areas best describe me and why, and identifies the cultural factors that influence my choice of philosophy.
What Is Philosophy?
The process of defining philosophy is very complex. Philosophy can mean different things to many people and is ever evolving. The actual term philosophy “is Greek in origin, and it is the composite of two Greek roots: philein, a Greek word for ‘love,’ and sophia, the Greek word for ‘wisdom.’ Taken together, they mean ‘the love or pursuit of wisdom’” (Chaffee, 2013, p. 6). Philosophy dares to answer life’s most complex, profound, and daring questions (Chaffee, 2013). Philosophy is the study of reality, what is right or wrong (ethics), existence, being, self, afterlife, even nature, and a deeper insight to all the many questions that human beings ponder on a deeper level. Back in the time before psychology there was philosophy. According to the great philosopher Cicero, “philosophy is simply the love of wisdom” (Chaffee, 2013, p. 6). Some early philosophers believe that whole purpose of humanity is to ponder “the profound essence of the universe” and wisdom is the way that one accomplishes this (Chaffee, 2013, p. 7). Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are the creators of Western philosophy (Chaffee, 2013).
