When people react selfishly to conflict, the consequences for society can be far reaching.

It is common to see that when people take a self-centred approach to conflict, it often has destructive repercussions on society. Since the beginning of human history, it is a part of human nature to feel some self-centred and selfishness however there are many examples that act as stand-alone examples the effects that it can have on society. The first discussion point is Adolf Hitler and the holocaust. As well as the civil rights movement in America which was sparked because African Americans wanted nothing more than equality which will be the second discussion point. And finally, another more recent example was the political greed of the Rwandan genocide. One half of a country culling the other the Rwandan civil war reached its climax. History clearly provides the evidence and as philosopher George Santayana said “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
In the 1930’s and 40’s the whole world was exposed to how one man’s selfishness resulted in the mass genocide of 6 million people. Adolf Hitler, who just about all of mankind should’ve heard of, could not put aside his own selfish hatred and ambitions resulting in the massacre. Whilst it is in human nature to put ourselves before others, there are some cases in which this truth shouldn’t be given any light. Hitler claimed that “As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice” and to serve justice he simply took the helm of the sinking ship that was Germanys economy and out of his own self greed and anger, engraved his name in history as the ultimate epitome of evil and selfishness. The holocaust caused by the selfish hostilities of one man stand as a reminder that selfish reactions have far greater reaches for society.
