“Only seeing general patterns can give us knowledge, only particular examples can give us understand” To what extent do you agree with this assertion?

During a math class, we were taught that y=mx+c. We can consider we know the equation if we have memorize it and learn how to solve it, however in order to fully understand the equation, we need to know the structure of the equation (where m is the gradient of a line, c I s y-intercept while y and x are the variables and it will form a linear line), how will the plotted equation look like and how it behaves and finally how to apply it and relate it to the real world. By relating this back to the essay title “Only seeing general patterns can give us knowledge” and “only particular examples can give us understand”, I believe this assertion isn’t valid as it uses the word “only”, which implies that there is only one way to gain knowledge and understanding. However, there are   many aspects and levels towards knowledge and understanding.

To what extent do we need to know and understand a topic before we can say that we gain full knowledge and understanding of the topic? First of all, there is a difference between knowledge and understanding. According to the Oxford dictionary, knowledge is “facts, information and skills acquired through experience or education” (Knowledge, Oxford dictionary, n.d), while understanding is “perceive the intended meaning of words, a language, or a speaker”. Therefore knowledge is more about knowing the “facts, information and skills” (Understanding, Oxford dictionary, n.d), while understanding is when we “perceive” what the subject of matter means, and therefore we could apply the information. However the definition for knowledge is vague and incomplete. To what extent and how well do we need to know the facts, information and skills before it is called knowledge?
