Teen Pregnancy: A Serious Problem!

            Teen Pregnancy is a very important subject. It’s also a serious problem which can happen to anybody.   Today, the rate of teen pregnancy has declined. Indeed, according to the “Critical Link: Preventing Teen & Unplanned Pregnancy” article, “The teen pregnancy rate is down nearly 40 percent and the teen birth rate has been cut by one third since the early 1990s” (Brown 11). When discussing the family values concerning teen sex and pregnancy, it’s important to be clear about the attitudes and thoughts, bring up society's issues of pro-life and pro-choice, and discuss how we feel about each issue. Teens are developing their values and need to be able to think things through. Certainly, it remains a problem though for our society because teen pregnancy can often lead to poverty and to lower education; however, in response, there are a number of things that can be done to reduce unplanned pregnancy among teens.
          Poverty, in particular, is an outcome of teen pregnancy. When children have children, their opportunities are diminished right from the start, and the future is often one of poverty. Indeed, when teenagers give birth to their babies, they have to stop going to school to be able to take care of their baby, to raise them, but they also have to work to be able to meet the needs of the newborn.   In fact, according to The National Campaign to Prevent Pregnancy, “some young mothers may end up faring poorly no matter when their children are born” Almost one half of all teen mothers and over three-quarters of unmarried teen mothers began receiving welfare within five years of the birth of their first child” (“Teen Pregnancy is a Serious Problem”).   Therefore, most of the teen moms are alone to raise their baby because the father is too young, and hasn’t any income to support the mom and the baby or just didn’t recognize his child.
