What an Antacid is and what they do? Antacids are basic compounds that help reduce the acidity in the stomach. The stomach produces acid to help digest food, however sometimes there is an overproduction of this acid which in turn can lead to the irritation. Since Antacids are basic in nature, they help to counter the effects of stomach acid by neutralizing.

Antacids are usually taken orally and the most common Ant acid compounds are Aluminium hydroxide, Magnesium hydroxide, Aluminium carbonate, Calcium carbonate, Sodium bicarbonate and Hydrotalcite.   (1)                                           See Bibliography (1)
