Steroid Use: The Case for Tighter Restrictions

Being the biggest, most impressive person is something that is admired in sports, but many athletes are becoming great with the aid of steroids. Anabolic steroids are synthetics drugs that imitate testosterone, which is a natural hormone in a man’s body. The hormone’s anabolic effect helps the body retain dietary protein, aiding in the development of muscles (“Anabolic Steroids”). Like abusers of many other drugs, athletes still use steroids because they want to have advantages over other athletes. Steroid use is illegal, yet everyday athletes are using steroids and getting by with using these drugs. By implementing tighter restrictions, such as stricter penalties and more frequent testing, the use of steroids will lessen. There should be tighter restrictions on steroid use in sports because of the bad influence steroids have on adolescents, the unfair advantage steroids give players, and the harmful side effects.
As role models, professional sports players and other athletic figures who abuse steroids have a negative influence on adolescents. “It is not only the football player or the weightlifter or sprinter who may be using anabolic steroids...most alarmingly, adolescents take steroids- all linked by the desire to hopefully look, perform and feel better, regardless of the dangers” (“Anabolic Steroids” ). Due to today’s tolerance of steroids, the consequences for steroid use in professional sports such as football are often overlooked. Since adolescents look up to professional sports players, the “tolerance” of steroids makes them think using steroids is not a serious issue. Teenagers focus on how big, fast, and powerful these players are, especially the players who are abusing steroids. Society’s tolerance of steroid use is negatively affecting adolescents, who look up to the “big time” sports players (Rhoden).
