Chapter 1: Forever Changed
"Run!" That was the last word I thought I would ever hear my brother say. But thankfully, I was wrong.
It all started six weeks ago, but to us it seems like years. My brother, Daniel and I were riding our bikes through the small town of Brine Creek where we live. My name is Danielle Ryder, we're fraternal twins. He goes by Dan and I go by Dani, but our friends and family usually call me by my middle name, Haven. So anyway, we were riding our bikes to our friend Robbie's house to play Xbox when we saw this shady looking figure get out of a black, beat up old van parked under a weeping willow tree in front of Mrs. Grayson's "solitary fortress", uh, I mean house. Daniel and I slowed to a stop and got off our bikes. Walking beside them, we crept towards the figure. When we finally got closer, we could see that it was a middle aged man with greying jet black hair, a tuxedo jacket, tennis shoes, a cell phone he appeared to be talking into about "finding the right ones" whatever that meant, and wait...a taser!? Now, when I think back to the next moment, I wonder what the heck were we thinking, because a second later we found ourselves inching closer to the mysterious man. SNAP!! Really!? A twig!! A twig changed our lives forever!! Stupid twig!!!! Suddenly, the man turned on us. We turned to run, throwing our bikes to the ground. He grabbed at me and missed, but when he reached for my brother he caught him by the shirt. "Daniel!!!" I screamed his name. "Run!", was all he managed to say before the man pressure pointed him and he went unconscious. Then, the last thing I remember is feeling a sharp zap and my face smacking into the pavement.
