This essay seeks to explore the way certain social policies and changes to the Australian welfare state have affected the aged population. The aged population within Australia has made significant changes over the past 100 years. In light of this the key social policies that have been introduced to support these changes have been identified and also the strengths and weaknesses surrounding them. Jamrozik’s (2009) welfare/ post welfare state comparison has been used through the research on this topic to make clear the strengths and limitations that have arisen from the policies implemented. From this a predictions are made on further issues that may impact the aged population and some solutions suggested.
Older people within Australia represented just 4.0% of our population in 1901. Two decades later this increased to 6.4%. This increase in the aged population continued on to 2011 where it reached 14%. As described by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2013) within Australia we are experiencing an ageing population due to the high number of the baby boomers now reaching their late years, a decline in fertility rates and an increase in life expectancy. Over the last two decades the population of people over 65 years has continued to rise and it is predicted that this trend will go on for the next 50 years.   When people age they become more susceptible it ill heath and reliant government benefits. Therefore this growth in the number of elderly people has raised concerns of the further stress that it will p lace on our economic, social and health resources. Traditionally the majority women were once fulltime caring for their families and attending to household tasks however the spike in demand for aged care services has seen more and more women enter the workforce to help meet the needs of ageing in terms of healthcare.
