ESSAY ON SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND MICRO FINANCE



This essay will discuss about three different movements to address poverty that had an impact on Asia, particularly India. Social entrepreneurship is often founded to increase social capital and provide aid to people in need. India is a country that suffers from poverty. Poverty is the state of not having enough money to even afford the basic necessities for survival. This has been proving to be a major setback in India’s development. Through social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurs have been helping the needy through different projects in many different fields. The three big projects which will further be discussed are The Green Revolution, White Revolution and Micro-finance.
First, we will explore The Green Revolution, which majorly impacted the food production of the country. Food production is one of the most important sources of earning for a country. Especially in a country such as India, with a population of 1.28 billion (http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/india-population/), food is required in abundance. In 1943, in British-ruled India, a famine occurred which took the lives of about 4 million people due to hunger. This was known as the Bengal famine. After India was a free country, in 1947, food security was one of the issues that was on the Indian government’s agenda. All this concern led to the Green Revolution, which spread, from 1967-68 to 1977-78. The Green Revolution led to many successful agricultural experiments in many developing countries starting from Philippines where it was most successful. It gradually spread to different parts of Asia including India. The regions it gained most success in India were Punjab and Haryana along with the eastern plains of the River Ganges and parts of West Bengal.
