Last night Austin woke up in the middle of the night crying hysterically because he was going through another one of his crises.   He kept holding his stomach and he seemed to have a lot of pain in his abdomen, which is pretty common.   Luckily, this one only lasted a few minutes and I managed to calm him down rather quickly.   It’s hard to look at your 4-year-old son every day and know he is suffering because he inherited this gene from my husband and me.   I feel somewhat responsible for all of the pain he has to go through.  
Anyways, today I had to take Austin to his pediatrician.   We used to go once every other month, but now we only have to go once every six months.   The only exception is when Austin gets a fever of over 101 degrees.   Then we go to the doctor immediately.   Today was just a normal check up and the doctor said that Austin was doing fine, but he recommended that Austin drinks plenty of fluid, gets lots of rest, and stays out of extreme temperatures.   The first two are manageable, but the third is going to be difficult.   It’s snowing a lot right now and Austin’s favorite thing to do is go play outside in the snow with his brothers.   It kills me to have to watch Austin sit inside while his brothers are having fun outside without him.   It’s not worth it though; letting him go outside and then have to watch him go through crises.   If he’s too cold, gets sick, or doesn’t have enough fluids, then that leads to crises.   I also talked to our pediatrician about Austin’s size.   One symptom of sickle cell anemia is delayed growth. He said that the average height for a 4 year old is 38 inches.   Austin is 34 inches, which isn’t terribly small, but I can definitely tell when I compare him to the different boys his age in his preschool.    
Austin’s hematologist suggested that Austin start taking folic acid supplements.   Hematologists are doctors who specialize in blood and different blood...
