Fighting between Palestinians and Israelis has been an ongoing problem for almost one hundred years. Over 7,000 deaths have occurred on both sides since the year 2000. <http://www.ifamericansknew.org/stats/deaths.html> With the recent fighting in Gaza, that number has increased dramatically. But why are they fighting? Most of my friends don’t even know. The problem goes back to well before the Holocaust. In 1917 the British government promised the Jews a "national home" in Palestine, which was under Ottoman rule. <http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/balfour_declaration_of_1917.htm>   In the Jewish faith, a sacred “home land” is reserved for those who follow the Jewish religion. However, it was unclear what "national home" meant as far as territory. No distinct borders were established or what kind of border would be constructed to separate them from the non-Jewish. The biggest problem was that the area was already inhabited by Arabs. There was a widespread view among the Arabs already living there that the Palestinians had been promised that same land by Britain. So when Britain gained control of the Holy Lands, who was to inherit the land as their “national home”? Britain seemed to have promised the same territory to two groups of people. With that issue came the border police. The conflict of where Israel stops and Palestine begins has caused many casualties and the uprooting/destruction of millions of Sacred Palestinian sacred olive trees.
