In viewing this quote “Tis hard for an empty bag to stand upright” by Benjamin Franklin, the visualization of a plastic bag came to mind. The connotation of the bag’s inability to stand on its own, without internal support, can serve as a metaphor for describing how morals and values serve as a framework for individual codes of conduct. How an individual decides to conduct himself/herself in relation to others rests with his/her moral constitution and value system. Just as Franklin uses the analogy of how a dearth of framework leaves a bag unstable so does the lack of moral and values will leave an individual misguided and/or draconian.  
An individual’s actions mirror his/her belief systems.   This belief system configures what is morally just (i.e. right from wrong) with what is valued (i.e. code of conduct).   To perform good deeds/positive actions that are morally just and valued, certain characteristics must be modeled from within: honesty, compassion, courage, modesty and forgiveness.   In order for an individual to “stand upright” and be a morally just, he/she should obtain the positive qualities that have been defined by maternal instinct along with societal norms.   If such foundations have not been instilled at birth and nurtured throughout the adolescences; then just like the empty bag, the individual would have difficulty with stability in his/her own personal life and in society.
Ben Franklin once said, “Tis hard for an empty bag to stand upright.” Understanding that foundation is needed to assist the bag with stability correlates to the understanding that individuals need a moral foundation to exist. Morals and values provide this structure that helps develop the internal support all individuals need to become just individuals.
