The steps in testing a research hypothesis
It is difficult to survey all persons or objects within the research population, so samples are taken and analyzed. The sample data produces predicted results from the population. This is considered a hypothesis which is a proposed explanation made based on limited evidence as the initiation for further hypothesis testing. Hypothesis testing is a procedure used to determine whether the formed hypothesis is a valid statement and should not be rejected, or is unreasonable and should be rejected. There are 5 steps in the hypothesis testing. The first step is state the hypothesis of two possible outcomes, Null and alternative hypothesis. The null hypothesis is a statement that is accepted unless evidence is proven to be false. The null hypothesis represents the “status quo” or accusation about the population parameter the experiment is testing. The alternative hypothesis is a statement that is accepted only if the data proves evidence is true. This typically represents the values of a population parameter in which the researcher wants to gather evidence to support the hypothesis (McClave, Benson, & Sincich, 2011). The next steps are to select the appropriate test statistic and level of significance. The z-test is typically used when testing a hypothesis of a proportion and a t-test is used when testing a hypothesis of a mean. The test statistic is used to determine whether the researcher should use the null or alternative hypothesis. The third step is to state the conditions that will accept or reject the null hypothesis and identify the critical value for the test statistic. The critical value separates the non-reject region from the reject region ("Test Of Hypothesis", 2014). The fourth step is to compute the appropriate test statistic and compare it with the critical value. The null hypothesis is rejected if the computed value is within the rejection region; we only accept the null hypothesis if the computed value is...
