A person afflicted with a personality disorder characterized by a tendency to commit antisocial and sometimes violent acts and a failure to feel guilt for such acts.

In the Play “Othello” by Shakespeare Iago play the role of a deceiving psychopath who is out to destroy many people relationships and lives. Although this may not be apparent anywhere near the beginning, there are signs of this that peek through the text. What makes Iago a psychopath is a combination of 3 things. Firstly Iago is antisocial. He Uses Cassio as his purse to get to Cyprus. He also has a suspicion that Othello has slept with his wife and will believe so without proof as a fuel for his master plan. Iago also commits acts of violence. That is the second part in being a Psychopath. Iago even goes as far to kill his wife Emilia near the very end of the play for giving up his scheme. Iago’s scheme is finally revealed by his wife, when she realizes that her husband Iago had indeed planted the handkerchief in Cassio’s room. Enraged Othello stabs Iago then takes his own life with a hidden blade. Lastly Iago feels no guilt. Throughout the whole course of the play, Iago played with people’s emotions and toyed with their minds. This becomes very evident in the scene when Iago plants the handkerchief in Cassio’s chamber. Then a short while afterword’s mentions to Othello that he has seen Cassio use such a handkerchief as the one he had gave his wife as a token of there love. Although Iago knows he is lying and picking apart a loving relationship, he appears unfazed and even mentions later that all is in order to Roderigo. “If thou the next night following enjoy not Desdemona, take me from this world with treachery and devise engines for my life.”   Through These three different scenes or sections of the play we can evidently see the Iago fits rather well into the category of a psychopath.
