Positivity towards Uniforms
“...families are expected to spend a total of $26.7 billion for K-12 children, although that number reaches $72.5 billion when college-aged kids are added to calculations” (Klein, 2013). These numbers show how much money is spent on back-to-school clothes shopping. This much money should not be spent on clothing. Uniforms in schools are beneficial for not just students, but parents too because they would be saving money. That is only one of the reasons why school uniforms are for the better. Schools have been switching over to school uniforms for quite some time now. Positivity over uniforms has been spreading and more schools continue to adopt the concept. Even mayors of cities issue policies and praise school uniforms in many ways. School uniforms should be mandatory because students focus more on their school work, harassment is lowered, less money is spent on clothing, people are brought together, and class time is saved for better use.
The earliest record of a clothing policy in an educational environment dates back to 1222 in Archbishop of Canterbury, England. To this day students still wear the same robe-like outfits and surveys show that students have no desire to change the policy. Uniforms being enforced at such an early time and students continuously liking the idea shows that they are valuable. School uniform policies were not introduced in the United States until the late 70s. Many positive comments arose from the policies and the awareness of school uniforms in the U.S. keeps growing to this day. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines uniform as, “dress of a distinctive design or fashion worn by members of a particular group and serving as a means of identification” (“Uniform”, 2014). Uniforms in school bring everyone together and produce positivity in an educational environment.
