Part A – Hydraulic rescue equipment

Question a

Pascal’s principle - states that when there is an increase in pressure at any point in a

confined fluid, there will be an equal increase in pressure at every other point in the container.

Meaning that pressure acts in all the directions.

Question b

* To understand Pascal’s principle imagine an enclosed fluid as in figure below

* The figure has two pistons which moves within.

* One of the pistons has a small cross sectional area,

* The other one has a large cross sectional area.

* The force pushes the small piston into the hydraulic fluid,

* This results that a pressure is transferred unto the larger piston.

* The pressure is the same, as per Pascal’s principle, on the small and large piston.

* Total FORCE = P X A

* The total force on the larger piston will be greater than the total force on the smaller piston.

* The larger piston multiplies force exerted on the smaller piston.

* P1 = P2 (P = F )

* F1 = F2 OR F1 = F2

* Thus F2 = F1 x A2

* If A2 > A1 then F2 > F1

* Due to the area at A2 being larger, and as Pascal’s law just explained, the force at A2 must be bigger, thus allowing the cutters to have such a great strength.
