Ideal Parenting
Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, a memoir by Amy Chua, is a reflection of one mother’s parenting style - a “Chinese” style of parenting based on strict regimentation and high expectations. (Chua, 2011) It is a parent-dominated approach to child rearing. Chua is a professor at Yale Law School and author of two best selling books on free market democracy and the fall of empires. Chua and her husband fellow Yale law professor are successfully raising an 18-year old piano prodigy who recently got accepted to Harvard University, and a younger daughter who is a gifted violinist. Is Chua’s authoritarian approach the most effective means of raising successful kids? Or is a more permissive and nurturing style of child rearing more effective to raising a happy all rounded contributing member of society?
Raising three young children of my own, I wanted to research the correct approach to parenting. I approached my friend and neighbor, Wendy Vease, who I believe would be a perfect candidate to shed light on this issue. Wendy is a mother to two wonderful girls, 16-year old Ellen and 12 year old, Joy. She also teaches at an elementary school. Being an avid reader, I asked her if she was familiar with the book I had in hand. Not surprisingly, Wendy informed me she had read it. I asked her what she thought of raising children with strict rules and high demands. Wendy described Chua’s parenting style as shallow and too materialistic. “What kind of parent trashes her seven year olds doll house if she doesn't perfect her piano composition? Or tells her child that an A- is a bad grade and that a child can only participate in extra curricular activities that can add to her resume for college? What happened to the simple joys of childhood? I am a strong believer in a child led form of parenting where the parent provides facilities to pursue what ever the child shows interest in.   Parents must respect their children’s innate curiosity,...
