Oprah Winfrey the Leader
What is a leader? A leader is anyone who others follow and look to for guidance. This definition perfectly describes Oprah Gail Winfrey. Oprah is best known for hosting her own internationally popular talk show “The Oprah Winfrey Show” from 1986 to 2011. She is also a well-known actress, philanthropist, publisher and producer. I chose Oprah because of all the many accomplishments she has and all the triumphs she overcame throughout her early life. After reading numerous articles and biographies about her I was inspired to do more research and base this paper on the wonder Oprah Gail Winfrey.
Oprah meets the behavioral leadership criteria of concern for task. This criterion describes her because she has numerous achievements that have progressed over time and continues to grow throughout the years. She started out hosting a television show in Baltimore called People Are Talking. Later she was recruited by a Chicago TV station to host her own morning show, which later became the wildly popular show The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her talk show aired for 25 seasons, from 1986 to 2011. Also in the year of 2011 she launched her own TV network, the Oprah Winfrey Network. She’s also very big on charity work and helping out the less fortunate. She is one of the most influential women in the world and she uses her power and resources to help those in need. Oprah has a very long list of things that she has accomplished throughout her entire life and I am sure that she has many more to come.
The second behavioral leadership criterion she meets is directive and participative leadership. She knows how to motivate people and her people strategy are very simple. She invests in top talent, seeks out smart mentors, values her customer and consistently nourishes each relationship. She also seeks out mentors that she admires who will offer her guidance as well.
