The US is highly dependent on oil, which creates an extremely costly and a politically and economically dangerous situation. The US burns through 19.5 million of barrels of oil a day (the Daily Green). That is a quarter of the world’s consumption and more than China, Japan, India and Russia combined (to put this in perspective of population refer to the population map enclosed).   More than half the petroleum consumed in this country is imported from other countries. Oil addiction has been a problem for America since the 1973 Arab oil embargo and America cannot seem to break its reliance on the Middle East and other foreign oil imports (USA today; Earl Beal; Terre Haute, Ind.). This dependence on imported oil is America’s Achilles heel. They have what America wants, which gives the US great vulnerability, thus threatening national security. The current dependence on the supply of crude oil from foreign countries must be reduced if America is going to gain energy independence. The problem is that as populations continue to increase the need for oil increases. Oil is not a renewable resource so as the demand grows the production level will decrease.   Therefore oil prices will go up and up and we will tap oil in more in accessible and dangerous locations, from an environmental standpoint.
