Good communication is the key to any successful relationship be it personal or professional. It is essential to recognise nonverbal cues as it creates an impression on people. The ability to understand and use nonverbal cues is a powerful tool that can help anyone to connect with others, express themselves, and build better relationships.
Nonverbal communication is defined as "messages expressed through symbols other than words or as nonlinguistic or outside of language". (Dobkin & Pace, 2006). There are several different types of nonverbal cues. For the purpose of this essay, I will be identifying and explaining four types of nonverbal cues and their possible corresponding messages based on the given photo.
Facial expressions are known to be responsible for huge proportion of nonverbal communication. The look on a person's face often conveys a lot of information as it is the first thing others will see before a conversation. However, due to social norms and cultural expectations, Ekman claims that people tend to control or hide their true facial expressions or reactions from certain emotional response. (as cited in Dobkin & Pace, 2006, p. 103). Based on the photo, it can be observed that the four people showcase a positive facial expression as they appear happy and smiling. They might be portraying an intensification of emotions whereby they intensify their happiness by putting on an exaggerated smile while communicating since they are maybe friends. They might not want to be perceived as aloof and unapproachable.
