When today’s children are having a hard enough time experiencing life outside of television, video games and cell phones, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) makes it harder for kids to be able to say no to SpongeBob and Halo by forcing schools to cut programs that foster the creativity and the ability to make students fascinated and involved in subjects they are engaged and excited with. Whether during school hours or after school programs, NCLB eliminates the chance for students’ own independent thinking as well as increases students’ risk of dropping out of high school.
The Department of Education uses a measurement called Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) to determine how every public school and school district in the country is performing academically according to results on standardized tests, and then uses the AYP data to make multiple different changes to underperforming school governance including cutting public funding.
NCLB forces teachers to teach to the test, rather than engage students creatively that can cultivate a desire for more and promote the necessity of a quality, well-rounded liberal arts education. Schools are forced to cut advanced and accelerated learning classes for gifted students who value their education, and place them among the rest of their class so they can help their classmates understand the subject and curriculum better. Schools are also forced to cut funding to programs in the Arts, History, Geography, Sex and Physical Education and increase its focus and funding attention to the three subjects stipulated by NCLB: reading, math and science. Teachers and schools are now forced to teach to the standardized tests their students will be taking to avoid disciplinary action, and budget cutting. Accountability is necessary in our public schools, yet holding teachers accountable for ensuring all students in their class pass these standardized tests will not prepare students for the ultimate goal of our public education system-...
