Nike vs. Adidas

Nike and Adidas are both sportswear companies whose products have been battling it out throughout the world; to be the top sport companies in the sport industry. For this essay I will be comparing and contrasting Nike and Adidas in terms of where their headquarters are, marketing and sponsorship, and quality of product including price.
Nike is an American international sportswear manufacturer. Nike (formally known as Blue Ribbon Inc.) was found in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight; it changed its name to Nike and introduced the famous “swoosh” in 1971. However, Adidas is a worldwide manufacturer based in Germany and was founded by Adolf Dassler in 1949. These two companies offer a wide variety of sportswear including: footwear, clothing, backpacks, and accessories. Nike has recently branched out of their comfort zone and expanded more internationally. Most recently Adidas partnered with Manchester United of the Barclay’s Premier League to be their sponsor on their jersey for the next 10 years reportedly worth 750 million pounds ($1.3billion). United was previously sponsored by none other than Nike.
Previously stated Nike has begun to branch into the international market, which is helping them bring in more and more sponsorships. Nike has a unbelievable lineup of star athletes they sponsor including: Cristiano Ronaldo, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and most famous Michael Jordan. All of these athletes factor into Nike’s dominance of the advertising and marketing aspects of the business. On the other hand, Adidas has been focused more on the European market even though it is a well known company worldwide. This is due to their dominance in soccer and tennis. Currently, Adidas’s biggest endorsement towards a player in any major sport is Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona; he earns in a full year 13.6 million pounds ($24 million).
