In the age of universal electronic connectivity, of viruses and hackers, of electronic eavesdropping and fraud, network security has assumed increasing importance. The need to protect and preserve information contained in the network is equally important. The technology to store and protect information has evolved significantly through the centuries, from a paper-based written information stored in a locked cabinet, to a digital information stored in a computer-based data storage devices. In a Local Area Network, each computer is interconnected with the others. This expose the information to a possibility of being hacked by an unauthorized intruder. This paper will discuss the ability and function of Intrusion Detection System in computer network and its effectiveness of implementation in a Local Area Network. This project tests the reliability of SNORT as an Intrusion Detection System in executing the attack analysis tasks. Network scanning software had been used in order to test the ability of this system. Besides, this project also perform the ability and reliability test of LINUX operating system in handling Network Intrusion Detection System. The system is tested to a LAN and shows considerable result.
