Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (2012) by Merriam-Webster, Incorporated defines Stagnant as, “not advancing or developing”; in light of this my motivation for returning to college to learn is to avoid career stagnation.   For a number of years I have been trying to obtain a position in executive level management within my chosen career field and it is now my opinion that I have reached a professional impasse due to my lack of what is traditionally viewed as a formal education.   I have come to the realization that in today’s competitive work place traditionally accredited credentials are essential in backing up ones “school of hard knocks” education.   As a Motor Transport Operations Chief in the United States Marine Corps I have supervised entire sections of Motor Transport Marines, trained Motor Transport Operators on the most advanced equipment at the time, and advised Motor transport Officers on conducting Motor Transport operations in support of field exercises from combat insertions to trips to the mess hall.   Today I work for the largest bulk petroleum carrier in North America, and although my position is considered in the hierarchy of the company to be an entry level one, personnel in management knowing me personally or from my background and   resume, are constantly asking me questions and for advice concerning driver management to delivery windows to policy changes.   However in light of all my accumulated knowledge and skills as well as the fact that numerous policy changes have come about as a direct result of my input; in a room full of BAs, MBAs and PHDs, I am still just “a driver”.
The context that mainly motivates me to learn is the “Practical Context” because I have always believed that the more you know, the better off you are, and being an avid reader I am always reading across a broad range of subjects.   Like Sara I have always been open to learning new things, and I prefer to know that the knowledge and skills that I am making an effort to gain...
