Geography Migration Task:
Australia, an island country and continent in the southern hemisphere, in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, a member state of the Commonwealth of Nation. A country made up of people from all around the world, a multicultural country. Australia accepts migrants and refugees from all around the world.About 24% of the Australian population is made up of people born in other countries, migration is not a new thing in Australia, migration is what made Australia what it is today.
The first migrants were the European settlement when the convicts from Brittian and Irland were transported to Australia and soon after voluntary immigrants followed. The discovery of gold just outside Bathurst in 1851, Australia's migration changed , people arrived in larger quantities and from different backgrounds such as China, Us and South Pacific. When Australia Federated in 1901, the first legislation was passed by the new parliament which was the immigration Restriction Act, often referred to as the 'The White Australia Policy'. Here only European or British born where allowed to migrate to Australia. After WWII Australia wanted to populate again so here again they began assisted migration. In 1973, declaring Australia a ‘multicultural’ society, Al Grassby announced that every relic of past ethnic or racial discrimination had been abolished. The Australian Citizenship Act of that year declared that all migrants were to be accorded equal treatment.
Today migrants are assessed according to their sustainability to enter Australia according to the following categories; The Government accept migrants from these particular categories.
