Marijuana. This is a term that a good amount of United States citizens aren't very comfortable with. This term also refers to pot, weed, cannabis, grass, bud, ganja, hashish, green, etc. One may be familiar with one or more of these names depending on their knowledge on the subject. The majority of Americans believe that the use of marijuana should be legal, however as the topic continues to grow and more people are becoming informed, the majority is soon to be in the hands of the pro-marijuana group.1 Ultimately, the big issue is whether or not this plant should be made legal for the use of American citizens. Personally, I believe that marijuana should be made completely legal for myriad reasons which I will get to further in this material.
An interesting thing about U.S. History is that many things are left out to protect the look of our country. The books leave out what really happened. For instance: When Christopher Columbus came to the new world from Spain, it was one of the most horrible genocides in history. Murdering mass amounts of natives to the land. The reason the writers leave this out is because it is too much for the average Americans to comprehend. Another thing that the books leave out is marijuana's history in the early United States. The previously mentioned Spanish brought cannabis sativa over to the Americas from Spain. In the early settlement days of the United States, tobacco was not the only cash crop in Jamestown. It was grown along with the cannabis plant. As a matter of fact, it was a law that all settlers were required to grow the plant. Many historians do not doubt the fact that our founding fathers used and grew the plant. A very wise man who's interest was in the upper class of the United States once said, "Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country." This was said by Thomas Jefferson. George Washington's primary crop at Mount Vernon was in fact marijuana. Our first president...
