Cell phones have become one of the fastest growing communication technologies. Cell phones are useful for many different reasons including communication, organization, and internet access. These tools may be used to connect students, parents, friends and family. They are also particularly useful computers that fit in your pocket, are always with you, and are nearly always on.
Cell phones are becoming more and more sophisticated, and having features students can use for work and play. Having a browser in the cell phone puts a dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia into the hands of every student. Students, now having access to search engines, can use their cell phone as a research tool. Cell phones can also help students learn with understanding rather than merely memorizing large amounts of information, and then use this knowledge as a basis for new learning.
I believe that mobile learning will make education more accessible in that it will enable learners to pursue their studies according to their own schedule. Since we can carry our cell phones with as all the time this means that mobile learning is not bound by fixed class times, it will enable learning at all times and in all places, during breaks, before or after shifts, at home, or on the go.
Mobile learning can also increase access in those situations where cost represents a major barrier to learning. For those in rural or remote areas where environmental and infrastructure challenges slow down other learning methods, such as eLearning, mobile learning presents great opportunities. For some learners, mobile technology is much more inexpensive than other technologies like personal computers and broadband connections. With the use of mobile learning, educational services can be delivered with learners’ existing resources.
