How Fire Can Stray From Civilization
“There is a savage beast in every man, and when you hand that man a sword or spear and send him forth to war, the beast stirs.”   ― George R.R. Martin. Overall, what George R.R. Martin is saying that even the best of mankind has part savage in them and that shows how even the best stray from civilization. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the world is at war and parents send their children away from the war where they could still learn and not become endangered. The plane they are in crash lands after being shot down and all the boys on that plane become stranded with only themselves to survive and find a way off. Therefore, William Golding uses fire to explain the loss in civilization brings out evil in the boys.
At first, fire is used as a hope or rescue to evacuate the Island and at this point, there is no civilization lost in the boys. Early on the boys figure out that there needs to be some sort of signal for there to be any kind of chance to off the island. “If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make fire.” (38) Overall, this says that the boys need fire to survive and prosper to the next day, and describes how fire will help them succeed in leaving the island, giving them hope and letting them retain the civilization that they have. Afterwards, the fire gives off the first signal giving hope and excitement to the boys. “Acres of black and yellow smoke rolled steadily toward the sea. At the sight of the flames and the irresistible course of the fire, the boys broke into shrill, excited cheering.” (44) The boys have achieved their first success as a group, and with that shows a magnificent reward that smoke can be possible. This gives them hope that rescue is still reachable and that they will be off in no time. Hope is a strong presence in civilization.
