B. Background
Literature is an “imaginative” writing in the sense of fiction – writing which is not literary true. there are three genre literatures : prose, drama, and poetry. Each genre has intrinsic and extrinsic elements.
A prose (short story) is a literary piece which is written in the pattern of ordinary spoken language and within the common flow of conversation. the intrinsic elements of the prose are character and characterization, setting, plot, conflict, point of view, atmosphere/mood, tone, theme, symbol. And for the extrinsic elements are literature and biography, literature and psychology, literature and society, literature and though.
In the intrinsic elements, what does a character do? The way in which a character is shown as acting or reacting is one of the chief ways in thich authors estabilish personality. These are the kind of characters : protagonist VS antagonist, Major VS minor character, flat (static) VS round (dynamic) character, and omniscient.
According to Gill (1985) he says that stories and plots have some distinctions, another way of treating the problem is to look at it from the point of view of the reader and ask about how and when the readers come to know something. It’s possible to draw a distinction in these terms between story and plot : a story can defined as the events in the order in which they happened. and a plot can be defined as the order of events in which the reader learns...
