Personification also known as Anthropomorphism is when human characteristics are given nonhuman organisms or inanimate objects. Anthropomorphism was first used in the mid-1700s. It came from the Greek word Anthropos meaning “human” and morphe meaning “shape” or “form”. It was used for storytelling and arts. Many cultures use anthropomorphism to tell fables of animals with human characteristics like the ability to talk. In John F. Kennedy's inauguration address he states,” . The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe. “ this is a use of personification to the graves are given the ability to answer a call. This shows how human characteristics are given to an object.Emily Dickinson's poem “Because I could not stop for Death” states,” Because I could not stop for Death -He kindly stopped for me. “ Death is giving human characteristics. Franklin Delano Roosevelt stated, “Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.” The forest is given lungs which is a human characteristic. Another example is “Money is the only friend that I can count on.” Money is given human qualities of being one's friend. Furthermore, another example would be, “Justice is blind and, at times, deaf.” This is describing justice with human characteristics. Many people use personification in their writing and even adverisements to change the mood of the plot or try to convey the audience to a certain mood. It also helps people relate easily to things with human qualities.
