In my eyes, leadership is both a quality that some people may possess, and a skill that some people may apply. To be a leader is to take on a responsibility like no other. Whether you are the captain of the soccer team or the president of the student body, you are doing one thing: guiding your people to achieve greatness and doing so by being the best person that you can be.
In order to make a great leader you must be ready to take on a huge responsibility. You must be willing to sacrifice a lot of your own wants and desires and realize that you are supposed to be an example and positive influence to all of those who are following your lead. You must be honest not only with your peers but with yourself as well. You must have confidence in what you are doing but be humble all at the same time. To lead successfully you have to be willing to listen to those around you and know that your thoughts and ideas are not the only ones worth being heard. Leaders can have a positive or negative influence on society. There are people who may abuse their leadership skills and end up abusing their power or leading their people to failure. This is why when you are a great leader you must always remain humble and honest with yourself.
The most important things you must possess as a leader are passion for what you are doing, vision to be able to see a bright future, communication skills to confidently get your voice to be heard, good judgement to make the best decision for the toughest situation, and knowledge in whatever you are trying to make better. I believe I have all of these qualities and I hope to soon be put in the position to put them to great use! My vision is to be captain of the soccer team as a sophomore and lead them to victory both on and off the soccer field.
As a freshman in high school on the varsity soccer team I can only be honest with myself in knowing that I would not be pronounced captain so quickly. Although that is what I would love, I know it is...
