“Bridging two worlds: Reading comprehension, figurative language instruction, and the English-language learner”
In the Article “Bridging two worlds: Reading comprehension, figurative language instruction, and the English-language learner”, the author takes us on a journey from fear and confusion surrounding the English language to understanding and confidence in its use. The article is presented in three parts. In the first part the author explains the difficulty many ELL students have when they begin to learn English. These difficulties include things like lack of exposure to the language, minimal use in the home, and the comprehension of figurative language. Use and comprehension of figurative language is actually a theme that the author keeps referring back to. The author gives the example of hot it can be difficult to interpret a persons meaning just based on their words using the word hot. The author points out that h can mean something is physically heated, or can mean such things as pretty, good, lucky, and so on. The authors also take a moment to tell us they will be introducing specific strategies for figurative language interpretation.
The second part of the article is a story about a boy named Alejandro. Alejandro is a typical Spanish-American student. The author takes time to gives us, the readers, background on Alejandro's family, his siblings, where they came from and that they moved to Los Angeles when he as 6. The author adds an extra level of difficulty for   Alejandro by telling us that the family moves back to El
Salvador where they had fled 4 years earlier, due to the gang violence in L.A. After 14 months of forgetting the English he had previously learned, the family moved one final time to Florida. In Florida, Alejandro...
