Lab report: Understanding the adequate macronutrient distribution range (AMDR) energy yielding nutrients
Nowadays, many people are concern about how to eat heavily and maintain their body weight. To do this, the energy uptake and the energy consumption have to be in balance. In the body, three organic nutrients can be used to provide energy, they are carbohydrate, fat and protein. Each of these three energy-yielding nutrients contributes different amount of energy. A gram of carbohydrate yields about 4 kcalories of energy, a gram of protein yields about 4 kcalories of energy and a gram of fat yields about 9 kcalories of energy. To eat healthily, food pyramid is recommended by Hong Kong Government and many more reputable organizations in the world. Although daily amount of energy and nutrients anindividuals needs varies among individuals, depending on age, gender, body height, body weight, activity level and health conditions, portion sizes can roughly be recommended based on age group. Also, to determine the composition of a diet that provides adequate energy and nutrients and reduces the risk of chronic diseases, we can use Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR) as reference.
Form the practical, we want to understand how to design a balanced diet which contain suitable amount of nutrients for an adult aged 19 to 50 years old by calculate the energy available from the foods. Also, we want to understand how the portion sizes of each food groups affect the energy yield.
