Lookout Mountain Youth Service Center is a state prison located in Golden, Colorado. It is a low security prison that houses juvenile inmates, up to age 21. This institution is for the highest risk and highest needs kids. The max capacity of the prison is 160 inmates, with the average age being 18. 85% of the juveniles are on some type of medication, and many struggle from mental issues. They provide rehabilitative programs to get their inmates prepared for a positive lifestyle after incarceration. Although the boys are locked up during the night, in individual cells, they are also given the opportunity to use the recreation area, TV, phones, video games, and other fun activities. To get the boys on the right track they are required to attend school and some are even given jobs. This facility is unique in the way it treats the inmates, as they are each given individual attention and treated as a peer, rather than looked down upon. The facility follows a strict model to provide right services at the right time, deliver quality staff, use proven practice, be in a safe environment, and embracing restorative community justice principles. Lookout’s overall thought is that “detention is not a location- it’s a status.” Kids should not be in a detention facility, but when they are there, they need to be attendant to the justice system and courts and act somewhat responsible during this time, and that is what Lookout is there for.

Mount Veiw Service Center is a secure co- ed facility that is operated by Colorado Department of Human Services, Division of Youth Corrections (DYC). MVYSC provides detention services for the First and Fifth Judicial Districts, Diagnostic/Assessment services for sixteen Judicial Districts along the Colorado Front-Range, a secure Transportation unit that supports the Assessment function, and the Next Step program for youth who have returned to secure committed care due to unsafe behaviors .Mount View’s behavior management program is applicable...
