INTRODUCTION and MISSION STATEMENT
James Cash Penney opened a dry-goods store in Kemmerer, Wyoming in 1902, and this was the beginning of what is known as the J. C. Penney retail chain today. They called the first store “The Golden Rule” which was foundation of both the business and personal philosophy. He believed that the Golden Rule applied to all aspects of lie, and he intended to build a business using it as his philosophical cornerstone. J. C. Penney mission statement – Winning Together - principles for superior service was achieved through working together while following eight guiding principles.
Their mission statement that guided Penney and its employees was “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”. Today the mission statement for employees has specific guiding principles which define how they work. It is: “work and win together to achieve superior performance. They have eight winning together principles that are the mission for J. C. Penney employees today. They are: we value, develop, and reward the contributions and talents of all associates. We act only with the highest ethical standards. We provide coaching and feedback to perform at the highest level. We celebrate the achievements of others. We win together through leadership, collaboration, open and honest communication, and respect. We strive for excellence in our work, product, and services. We encourage creative thinking and intelligent risk taking. We care about and are involved in our communities. When this business was founded, it sought to win public confidence through service. With the right service to the public, it would result in mutual understanding and satisfying between customer and merchant.
