The Impact of Islam on the Middle East
Islam has had a significant impact on the Middle East. Prior to the birth of Islam, it was a time of ignorance, or Jahilliyah. There was not a formal religion, no formal laws to guide people, and no sense of social equality. Islam can be credited to the dismissal of those “ignorant” times in the Middle East. Once established, the people that became followers of the religion, also known as Muslims, would soon experience the influence that Islam would have on their lives and their culture. This includes Muhammad, the Prophet of Allah, and his contribution to the establishment of Islam, the Qur’an, laws that followed based on the readings of the Qur’an, and the rights and roles of the women of Islam.
Muhammad was the pioneer of a new era. Growing up, he was a direct contrast of the Arabs around him. The future Prophet held strong, independent beliefs and ethics that differed from the men that he lived amongst. Over the years, Muhammad avoided alcohol and prostitution. He advocated better treatment of women and animals. In addition; he disallowed the religious norm of polytheism. Meditation was a normal part of Muhammad’s life. He would engage in meditation, sometimes for days at a time, in cave in the outer region of Mecca. One day, during meditation, he experienced something that would significantly impact the future of the Middle East, and the world. The angel, Gabriel, visited Muhammad and demanded him to read, despite his illiteracy. After Muhammad rejected the request, the angel insisted, “Read in the name of your Lord who created you”, which became the first revelation of the Qur’an.
Revealed to him during the month of Ramadan, the Qur’an, is a scripture that guides the Islamic faith. It is used daily, from worship to everyday situations.
