Professional development of nursing professionals
Institute of medicine (IOM) is an independent and nonprofit organization which was established in 1970. There are over 3 million members working in the nursing profession in nation’s healthcare. In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson foundation and the institute of medicine developed 2 year initiative to monitor and make changes in future nursing profession. The purpose of the foundation is to help nurses to work in complex areas and get maximum training in the growing health care field to be proactive in nursing profession. A committee is developed to examine and to give suggestions for nurse to improve and provide more efficient and effective care in the health care setting. It also solve nurse’s shortage problem. The IOM committee gives 4 important messages about future of nursing.
1. All nurses should practice with their high level of education and training. (All new nurses should attend the nurse residency program to practice and develop skills and knowledge required to provide safe patient care. They should get state required license to practice as a nurse).
2. All nurses should get higher education and training from the well-developed and growing education system to advance in their career as well as in health care field. (Getting higher education and training will give the nurse an opportunity to provide safe and effective care to patients and families, it also allows to build a good career and to get more opportunities in various positions).
3. All the nurses should work along with all the members of the health care team like doctors and other higher educated personnel to make changes in the health care system. (Nurse should work as a leader and participate effectively to achieve the desired goal to advance the health system and improve patient care and satisfaction).
