Whenever people hear psycho they believe that it only deals with people living in mental hospitals. Furthermore, they avoid getting the help needed from a doctor. The reason may be that thanks to the 100 years of Hollywood movies many people are scared of any word that starts with psycho.   The reality is that most “regular” people do need some sort of psychological help at one point in their lives, whether it’s a psychiatrist, a counselor, any other mental doctor or just somebody to talk to.   According to Dictionary.com (2012) two definitions of psychology is one, the science of the mind or mental states and processes, two, the science of human and animal behavior.
Psychology has come a long way. Many human behaviors today were considered illnesses in the past. For example in the book of Abnormality Psychology by James HanseII and Lisa Damour (2008) state that “ in the 1973 homosexuality was categorize as an illness, but today it is a normal variant of human sexual behavior.   Also it has worked the other way around, many behaviors back then are considered a mental disorder nowadays. Another example in the book is the rising numbers of attention-deficit disorder (ADD) in children as well as in adults.” Probably 30 years back most children with this disorder where labeled as immature and undisciplined.   These are just two examples of abnormal psychology also called psychopathology. Even though psychopathology has come a long way clinicians have always used the six core concepts as a template for their diagnosis.   The six core concepts help mental doctors answer question to better evaluate patient health. It will give the doctors information to decide whether the patient has a normal behavior or not.
Since each individual is a unique world of its own, there is no right way of defining Abnormality. For this reason, it is a challenge for doctors to diagnose abnormal psychology. Even with the six core concepts it begins a challenge. Clinicians have to consider the...
