Upon her return from Europe and charged with violating the Comstock law provided public support that worked against the government (who had brought the charges) and her case was dropped.   Sanger felt that the time was right to bring women’s issues to the public and began giving lectures throughout the United States.   Through her travels found support and founded the Birth Control League now called Planned Parenthood.   She opened the first birth control clinic in in 1916, however, being unable to find any physicians willing to provide care, that she and her sister operated.   She and her sister provided birth control education for women until raided by the police.   She was arrested several times however upon release re-opened the clinic.   Again, because of the public outcry at her arrest she was only charged to 30 days in the workhouse (although Comstock had fought for 10 years hard labor).   Ultimately served her 30 days but not in the workhouse.   In 1918 her trial, however brought forth a change in the interpretation of a part of the Comstock Law in “the prevention or cure of disease” to apply to women now as well.   Medical professionals could provide information to women if there was any concern for medical issues.   Sanger ultimately hired Dr Hannah Stone and in 1923 opened the first doctor staffed clinic.   For the next six years the clinic provided education about birth control at the same time continuing efforts to collect statistical data relating to women’s pregnancy’s.   Dr Stone, provided women with necessary information for birth control even if the woman had no medical concern.   In 1929 the clinic was raided and the police confiscated the women’s medical records.   This was the catalyst that brought the much needed support from the medical profession.   Physicians, outraged at the violation of Dr. Stone’s doctor-patient relationship caused the police to return the medical files and the case was dropped.   In 1936 Sanger was successful in eliminating the...
