Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology
Abnormal Psychology, defined as a branch of psychology considered to be the study of abnormal behavior. As one examines the beginning of abnormal psychology, one may have considered one’s behavioral to be abnormal; however, as one evolves in society today, one’s abnormal behavior may consider to be the “norm’’ today. The way abnormal psychology has evolved into a scientific discipline is by the way, one study’s behavior in the psychosocial, biological, and socioculture aspect. Not two people are alike, so I believe abnormal psychology is different from one another because of one’s pathology, culture, and experiences.
Abnormal psychology, also known as, psychopathology is the way one’s behavior is abnormal. The way one sees abnormal may not be the way the people see it. In the book Abnormal Psychology, they use five commonly used criteria to determine whether behavior is normal or abnormal. The following are the five criteria: help seeking, irrationality/dangerous, deviance, emotional distress, and significant impairment. By answering if one’s patient has any of the five criteria, once can conclude that he or she has abnormal behavior. For example, using deviance as a criterion for mental illness is that people socially, politically or culturally different may be persecuted and stigmatized with the label “mentally ill” when they are just expressing their views   (Hansell & Damour, 2008, Pg.12). One cannot say that a person’s behavior is considered abnormal today will continue to be abnormal tomorrow in our society, depending on the way one was raised in his or her culture and the environment around a person can help us understand one’s behavior.
