The Hazards of America’s Industrial Food Chain
When have Americans ever really stopped and pondered about where the food that they were about to eat originated from? It is difficult in society to find an individual who is knowledgeable about what fruits and vegetables are indigenous to what region of the earth just by looking at them.   Without a label providing where the item was grown, when perusing through the tightly packed supermarket aisles, one would not observe and say “Oh, that’s a mangosteen. It is a small purple fruit from Thailand that has properties prone to fighting cancer.” We as individuals see the fruit as an odd foreign purple object and nothing more. This lack of knowledge plays a significant role in how American’s plan out their meals and what they eat. This is a scenario that resembles how most people would respond to Michael Pollan’s question, “What should we have for dinner?” posed at the beginning of his book, The Omnivores Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals. Through clearly identifying that America has a national eating disorder, he is then able to examine the American diet through first-hand experiences to educate readers on the importance of knowing where their food actually comes from. In America’s deep rooted interest in time management and money, we as a nation have slowly started to shy away from the natural food chain to that of an industrial chain. Through his use of vivid descriptions and research, Pollan is able to effectively dispute the ill effects of our transformation into an industrial food chain and the cause for concern when it comes to the nation’s health.
One of the most intriguing aspects in the reading to me was in the introduction; Pollan talks about how our culture of food has drastically changed over the years’.
