Narrative- “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” – Albert Einstein
Thesis- I’m here to talk to you about Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay man elected into public office as a Supervisor. But I’m not here to sway your views on gay rights, but to inspire you by how Harvey Milk lived his life.
Preview- Today I will be talking about how Harvey Milk was a hopeful man, who showed dedication to helping whomever was in need and a persevering leader in hopes to change the world for the better.
Main Point 1- Harvey Milk constantly showed his dedication to helping others through each one of his careers, no matter the struggle.
Evidence- Right off the bat, Milk joined the navy and worked his way up to become a junior lieutenant. Although coming to terms with himself as being a homosexual, he looked passed that, knowing that he’d be able to help our country. This especially shows his selfless dedication to helping our country.
Evidence- In a letter to his former lover, Milk writes, “Don’t say or do anything. I’ve been turned in by a third party.” However controversial, some believe this proves Milk was discharged for being gay. Although being discharged from the navy, he didn’t give up helping others in need and went on to become a teacher.
Main Point 2- Milk was always a persevering man, even when he didn’t particularly like his job. Milk was never completely satisfied working the jobs he had and never really had his heart in his work. Although unhappy, he was always known as being successful in the work he’s done. It wasn’t until later on in life when he owned his own camera shop in San Francisco when he had to deal with sales tax to business owners. In the newspaper The San Francisco Examiner, Milk was quoted saying, “"I finally reached the point where I knew I had to become involved or shut up.” This shows that Milk had strong hope that he could make a...
