Othello Critical Thinking

In the play Othello, there is a lot of jealousy, backstabbing, and betrayal that goes around. The main character is named Othello, Othello is referred to in the play as “the moore” because he is a man of color. Othello is disliked and treated very unfairly for being African American. Cassio is also an important character. Cassio is Othello’s right hand man, the problem with that is that Cassio got the position of lieutenant by passing Iago who was more highly qualified for the position. This is the start of all the jealousy and betrayal. Honest Iago is the most important character in the play because of all the deeds he delivers to multiple characters. Othello’s wifes name is Desdemona. The couple is deeply in love and Desdemona happens to be the daughter of the duke of Venice. The Duke of Venice is named Brabantio and he does not like Desdemona's choice of marrying Othello because he is a moore. Desdemona's best friend Emilia is also Iago’s girlfriend. Emilia also gets tangled up in Iago’s plans. Iago’s “buddy” Roderigo is also in love with Desdemona but Desdemona does not know that Roderigo exists. This sets the bait for all of Iago’s plans. Many of these characters experienced a moment of realization when they realized that honest Iago was not so honest.
After Othello is sent off to Cyprus, Iago and Roderigo are soon sent as well. Iago’s plan to get Cassio drunk works and Cassio ends up getting into a fight with Roderigo. Othello makes Cassio step down from his position because of the wrongdoing while he was in duty. Iago is then promoted and he tells Cassio to beg Desdemona to ask Othello for Cassio to have his job back. Meanwhile Iago tells Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair Cassio is spending a lot of time with Desdemona and Desdemona is talking so highly is Cassio.
