George Washington is a man that will never be forgotten in American history. Many Americans see his face just about every day without even realizing it. His picture is on the One Dollar Bill and the Quarter. His name is just about everywhere, whether it’s schools, towns, counties, states or even the capital. He helped form America. He was also very brave and intelligent and could stay under control in tough situations. Without him America wouldn’t be what it is today. George Washington was born on February 22nd, 1732 in Westmore County, Virginia. His parents’ names were Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington. His family owned tobacco plantations and slaves. Washington spent most of his childhood at Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg, Virginia. His father and brother died when he was very young so that prevented him from continuing his education across the Atlantic at England’s Appleby School. He was the first president of the United States, the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the revolutionary war, and he was one of the founding fathers. Washington was an Episcopalian. He was the first mason to serve as president. He is noted as the only founding fathers to release all of his slaves. He owned 124 slaves and freed all of them and paid them preceding his death. Washington had foreseen a great nation that would be built on republican lines using federal power. He used the government to preserve liberty, improve infrastructure, open up all of the western lands, promote commerce, reduce regional tensions, and promote American Nationalism. Throughout his life Washington pursued several different careers and was successful in all of them. Washington is best known for his military career and his involvement in politics. It is less well known that he was also a farmer, but nevertheless he owned a successful plantation.
