The Great Gatsby is a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald which is about a man by the name of Jay Gatsby whose only goal in life is to reunite with Daisy Buchanan, his lost love of five years. This goal leads him to acquire wealth and be reunited with Daisy, but it ends in death not in a happy ever after. This novel is classified into the genres of social commentary, American fiction and jazz age. Fitzgerald gives many thematic ideas, but one that stands out is love. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald presents the idea that love can become so great it can grow to be an obsession. By the near end of the novel Gatsby has reunited with Daisy and everything seems right in the world for Gatsby even though in reality it is not. By the end the affair Daisy was having with Gatsby is exposed and everything is put on the table ending Gatsby’s dream.
Gatsby’s love for Daisy had become obsessive and his behavior around her reflects that obsessive love. Gatsby reunited with Daisy when he requested Nick to invite her over for tea then takes her on a tour of his mansion. As Gatsby shows off his humble abode from the outside in “he hadn’t once ceased looking at Daisy and...he revalued everything in his house according to measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes (96-97).” By letting himself revalue his belongings because he valued her opinion over his own and he wanted to please her even though the objects were his. As he takes Daisy on a tour he shows her his room and “he took [takes] out a pile of shirts and began [begins] throwing them one by one before us [her], shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel…..Suddenly with a strained sound Daisy bent her head into the shirts and began to cry stormily (97-98).” His love had led him to get wealth just to be able to be able to be seen by Daisy since Daisy woöuldn’t even look at him if he hadn't any type of wealth.
Gatsby’s obsessive love towards Daisy made him believe and grasp for hope that wasn't there. His...
