  The Middle Ages in Europe, a period of time from approximately A.D. 500 to 1400, have been referred to by a variety of terms- the Age of Faith, the Dark Ages, the Age of Feudalism, and even a golden Age. The medieval era began with the destruction of the Roman Empire and the disorder that followed, which led to the rise of feudalism. During this period of darkness, the Roan Catholic Church provided spiritual direction as well as many nonreligious functions for the people of the times. Many literary, artistic, and architectural advances occurred.
    The age of Feudalism best describes the era between 500 and 1400 in Europe. Feudalism means protection and loyalty. For example the serfs (peasants) work the land and are bound to the knights, who are bound to the king. An example of that is also shown in Document 2 where John of Toul promised and took an oath to protect the count and countess of Champagne. In a time when there was no easy way of communication there was really no efficient, sensible political order that could be established. Feudalism was really the only way to make sure everything ran smoothly- even though some people were subjugated under it.
    The Age of Faith was also a great way to describe the era between 500 and 1400 in Europe. The Age of faith was all about Christianity. This was a very good time in Europe because everyone was united under the Catholic Church. In Document 4 you can see that the church is trying to prevent fighting on holydays so that they can be in peace and enjoy the religious holidays and experience the importance. Document 7 talks about the promise Gerald was making to God and to the Church. In this era many people became monks and nuns. They could not get married because they had to be faithful to the church and be devoted. The Golden Age also describes Europe in this era. What comes out of a Golden Age is Art, Science and, Math. During the Golden Age there was many beautiful architecture that till this day still stand....
