Ethical Dilemma Paper



    An ethical issue can be defined as a problem or situation that requires a person or organization to choose between alternatives that must be evaluated as right (ethical) or wrong (unethical). The United States faces many different ethical issues on a daily basis. The most common ethical issues have to do with abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, torture, animal rights and the environment, and corporate fraud. The ethical dilemma, currently in the news, that I have chosen to write about is the use of deadly force by police when dealing with unarmed individuals.
    Over the weekend in North Charleston, South Carolina a police officer shot and killed an unarmed civilian, while the suspect was fleeing. Video has emerged contradicting the officer’s account of the incident. The officer stated the suspect had taken the officers Taser gun and the officer opened fire fearing for his life. The video shows a different story, the suspect turns and runs from the officer and the officer pulls his gun and fires several shots at the suspect, then walks up to the suspect places something in front of him and then handcuffs the dying suspect. After the release of the video the officer was fired and charged with murder. This is a one example of the ethical dilemma at hand
    Some police officers are taking the law into their own hands and this needs to be addressed. Deadly force by a police officer should be a last resort. Officers are taught to shoot in the torso of an individual, while training in police academies. I believe if a suspect is armed then this method is necessary. If a suspect is unarmed, I feel that officers should be trained to wound an individual and only if there is no other possible options. There has been numerous cases in the past year where officers have shot and killed unarmed men.
