It was the worst thing I could imagine. It was my greatest fear in the world, my worst nightmare, and my horrible suspicion. The doctor had just confirmed it. I had leukemia.
I don’t know how this happened. I thought to myself. I’m just a normal girl, never had many health problems besides chicken pox and strep throat, just like every other kid. But it didn’t matter, because I had leukemia anyways. My mom reached over to hug me, and I just sat there stuff, not being able to show any emotion, afraid if I did I’d burst into tears, though on the inside I felt many. I started to listen to Dr. Williams again, figuring it was important. “You’re lucky, Tess,” he said. “We caught it early on and will hopefully be able to treat it and get rid of this invader.” I don’t know how he could call a barley fourteen year old girl with leukemia lucky, but I ignored it and let it go. “Can I go outside please, while you work out the appointments, Mom?” I asked. She silently agreed and I left the room. As soon as I left I went to the bathroom and threw up. The thought of everything I would soon have to go through was so terrible, it made me sick. The sadness that I felt seemed to take my breathe away, which was weird for me, being such a happy person. I heard someone open the door of the bathroom, and I saw it was my Mom. She wrapped her arms around me, and we stood there, bawling like that for what felt like a lifetime.
The next day at school, was a weird one. I tried my best to act happy and normal, but I couldn’t keep it up for long. I felt alone, and didn’t want to do any of the usual things I did, I even sat alone at lunch, not wanting to pretend to be happy anymore. No one could understand what I was through, or how I felt; and this was only a day after being diagnosed. I just wanted things to feel normal; I just wanted to not be sick. I wanted to be able to hang out with my friends without feeling like I was hiding something, like I was the odd one out, because I was sick....
