Employee Turnover & Absenteeism and Challenges
The challenges human resource professionals encounter, must be addressed and resolved promptly for an organization to operate smoothly. The declining gross domestic product and rising unemployment rates have forced businesses to stretch their dollars and do more with less. Finding the right talent, creating opportunities, and managing labor and benefit costs (Rose, 2009) will be three of the most prevalent challenges human resources will have to face.
Employing a satisfactory workforce is necessary for any organization to succeed (Rose, 2009). Unemployment has created a sea of candidates willing and ready to work. Spending valuable time interviewing applicants not suitable for a position can be frustrating and is not cost effective. Organizations need to target experienced, educated, and talented job seekers who will be a productive team player, as well as bring creative ideas to the table.
As “Baby Boomers” reach retirement age, many are not financially able retire. A large portion of these individuals lost their retirement funds with the recession. Slow business expansion paired with postponed retirement leaves few opportunities for the younger workforce to enter (Rose, 2009). The challenge human resource faces is creating opportunities for the most valued employees. Continued education, career advancement, and cross training, are possible resolutions to this challenge.
Many companies would rather cut salaries and benefits than lay off employees (Rose, 2009). The individuals that maintain their positions often have to work twice as hard for fewer benefits. This can be discouraging and create low moral within an organization. The challenge for human resources will be to create strategies that will meet operational needs while retaining valuable workforce.
